Scope and content

Sub-series consists of 4056 original architectural drawings and 8510 reproductions documenting Douglas Cardinal’s architectural projects from 1963 to 1984. The architectural drawings consist of both built and unbuilt projects. The drawings document the preliminary design process including sketches, conceptual drawings, development drawings, and schematics, as well as the construction process including architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical working drawings. Over 100 of Cardinal’s projects are represented in the sub-series, primarily projects located in Alberta, but also in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories. Among the projects documented are St. Mary’s Church (Red Deer), Headstart Kindergarten (Cardston), Grande Prairie Regional College, Hay River High School, Grotski Residence (Edmonton), Cardinal Design Studio (County of Parkland), Parada Building (Edmonton), Spruce Grove Composite High School, Spruce Grove Multi-Use Facility, St. Albert Civic and Cultural Centre, Leighton Artist Colony (Banff), and the Cambridge Bay Complex. The sub-series also includes the drawings for several community development masterplan projects for First Nations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, including Thunderchild First Nation, Onion Lake Cree Nation, James Smith Cree Nation, Saddle Lake Cree Nation, and Cold Lake First Nations. The files in the sub-series are arranged chronologically by project by the archivist. At the end of the sub-series are several files of drawings not created by Cardinal but instead likely maintained for reference or for use in the research and development of his projects.
