Biographical history

Burwell James “Red” Charles, 1894-1966, was born in Aurora, Ontario to parents Herbert and Effie (nee Heacock). He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1920. Later that year, he moved to Calgary, Alberta and set up a dental practice in the Herald Building until he retired in 1966. Among his many interests, Dr. Charles enjoyed filming Calgary’s pioneer citizens as well as his family and friends. Dr. Charles showed his moving-picture films to audiences at various Calgary venues. He married Pearl Sherwood in 1929 and they had one child, Mary Louise Charles.

The fonds consists of film reels showing footage of early Calgary pioneers and Dr. Charles’ daughter Mary Lou and other family and friends. Calgary pioneers include: Andrew Davison; Cappy Smart; Colonel Dingle; Archdeacon Tims; Senator Riley; Clem Gardner; Dr. J.N. Gunn; Dr. George Kerby; Robert Ware; P. Turner-Bone; E.V. Johnson; Colonel James Walker; Senator Pat Burns; A.P. Patrick; A.W. Dingman; Colonel Sanders; Harold Riley, Sr.; G.C. King; Lady Lougheed; Peach Davis; and others. Also includes file containing further biographical material on Dr. Charles, his wife, Margaret Pearl Charles, and daughter Mary Lou Charles; clippings relating to film footage; and listing of film contents.
