He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in Calgary, Alberta from 1924 to 1945 and was a trainman, brakeman and toolmaker. He was an early Social Credit supporter but by 1936 he repudiated the Aberhart government as not being true to Social Credit principles. He served on Calgary's city council as alderman in 1936 and 1937, and was leader of Independent Social Credit council members. He was also acting mayor October-December 1937. In 1938 he was president of the Calgary Council of the Canadian Federation of Labour, and ran unsuccessfully for city alderman as a labour candidate.
