He received his Bachelor of Arts (English) from Hope College, and both his Master of Arts, Theatre Arts (Directing) and Master of Fine Arts (Stage Design) from Northwestern University. He was certified by the United Scenic Artists of America (UASS) in set design, costume design, and lighting design in 1969, and as a scenic artist in 1974; he was certified by acclaim in 1980 by the Associated Designers of Canada.

McCullough held several posts as instructor, professor, design director, and technical director at the Evanston's Children's Theatre (1967-1969), and Northwestern University (1969-1977) before moving to Canada in 1977. He was Acting Head of the Department of Drama at the University of Calgary (1981-1982), Head (1982-1983), and Associate Professor, Professor and Senior Designer (1977-2011).
