Biographical history

Douglas George Vivier, 1944-1996, was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, and worked for several years as a heavy equipment operator in the Yukon. After studying social work and education at university he devoted himself full time to the Metis community in Calgary and Alberta. He served as a member and chairman of the Calgary Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee (an agency of the City of Calgary) and director of the Calgary Native Friendship Society. He was very active in the Metis Association of Alberta (later renamed Metis Nation of Alberta), and served as President of Calgary Local No. 87 (which he helped found) and on the board of the Zone 3 Regional Council of the organization. In 1992 he established Frontier Services Inc., a general contracting company, which he ran until 1994. He had one child, Charlette, 1978- . He died suddenly of a heart attack on May 30, 1996.

The fonds consists of his personal papers, including genealogical records and his application for Metis status; incorporation documents and work orders for Frontier Services; minutes, correspondence, and reports of various organizations to which he belonged, including the Metis Association of Alberta / Metis Nation of Alberta (Zone 3 and Local 87), Calgary Native Friendship Society, and Calgary Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee; and reference material related to the Metis.
