Biographical history

Donald Macbeth Kennedy, 1884-1957, was born in Scotland. He came to Canada in 1903, spent time in British Columbia and Manitoba, and returned briefly to Scotland before deciding to farm in Alberta's Peace River district. In 1911 he homesteaded at Waterhole, near Fairview. He married Mable M. Macdonald in 1916 and they had three daughters, Margaret (Anderson), May (Jones) and Helen (Milton). He was the first secretary of the Waterhole local of the United Farmers of Alberta, formed in 1916. He was elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1921, but gave up his seat for the new UFA premier, Herbert Greenfield. Later the same year he was elected as the UFA Member of Parliament (MP) for Peace River and sat in Parliament until his defeat in 1935. As an MP he was a strong advocate of better railways for the Peace River country. He returned to farming and became a large-scale breeder of Herefords. He served as president of the Peace River Livestock Shipping Association, 1939-1956.
