Biographical history

Donald Wynn Axford, 1920-2005, was born and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba. During the Second World War he was a radar operator in the Canadian Navy, and afterwards received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology and physics from the University of Manitoba. Axford worked for Mobil Oil for twenty-eight years in Calgary, Texas and New York. He was a pioneering figure in the eastcoast offshore industry while with Mobil and remained involved with the region for the rest of his life. Axford worked briefly for Petro-Canada, then established his own oil company in Calgary, Alberta, where he lived for most of his life. He received a gold medal from the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame in 2001. Axford married Ruth Hartig, 1924-2011, and they had four chilldren, Janet, Donald "Jon", 1956-2015, Bob and Eric.
