Biographical history

Denny Layzell, 1916-1971, was born in Calgary, Alberta. He became a reporter in 1934 and in 1939 joined the Calgary Herald as a police reporter. He was well known for his knowledge of horse racing and covered the track for the Herald for many years. He wrote two books on horse racing, Two to Win and Western Thoroughbred. During the Second World War he was a publicity relations officer in the Canadian Army. He and his wife, Rose, had three daughters, Sharon (Weed), Nancy (Rayburn) and Denise (Aiello).

Scope and content

The fonds consists of Layzell's articles about horse racing, manuscripts for his books, racing programs (primarily Victoria Park and Chinook Jockey Club), newsclippings about horse racing, and photographs of horse races and miscellaneous views. Includes program for the EP Ranch thoroughbred horse dispersal sale (1930), and a biography of jockey, Johnny Longden.
