        History

Hubert Darrell, 1875-1910?, was born in Worthing, Kent, England. He emigrated to Canada at age 16 to join his brother, Charles, who had recently settled in Manitoba. He farmed with Charles until going to northern Canada to prospect in the late 1890s. He travelled to Great Slave Lake, NWT in 1897, and then to the Klondike gold rush in the Yukon in 1899. In 1901 he guided David T. Hanbury's second Arctic expedition. He continued to prospect, and served as a guide for the Royal North-West Mounted Police (RNWMP), until he disappeared in December 1910. For further information see Dr. Peter Neufeld's article, "Hubert Darrell : Forgotten Giant of the North" in Canadian Frontier, vol. 3, no. 3 (Fall, 1974), p. 4-7.
