Phyllis Edith Mary Darby, 1906-1997, was born in London, England, the daugher of John Thomas, 1883-?, and Philadelphia Darby, 1873-1958. The family lived in Swift Current and Medicine Hat before settling in Calgary. Phyllis attended Alexandra High School in Medicine Hat and later studied painting at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art and with several private tutors. She worked as a secretary at Ogilvies Flour Mill in Medicine Hat (1923-1928), Riverside Iron Works in Calgary (1928-1930), Calmont Oils in Calgary (1930-1931), Alberta Forestry Branch, Turner Valley Gas Conservation Board and Debt Adjustment Board in Edmonton (1931-1935), and Board of Grain Commissioners in Edmonton (1935-1971). In 1936 she travelled to France as part of the Vimy Pilgrimage.
