        History

        John Christie Dafoe, 1864-1926, was born in Hungerford, Ontario and moved to Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1882. In 1888 he returned to Ontario and in 1890 married Margaret Gordon, ?-1902. They had six children, Sam Elliott, 1891-1974, John, 1892-1893, Sarah, 1894-?, Gordon, 1896-?, Mary Anah (Love), 1898-?, and Hazel Grace, 1899-1977. From 1890 to 1897 they lived in Moosomin and then they moved to Calgary, Alberta. About 1901 the family moved near Gleichen to manage the 2 Bar Ranch for Margaret's brother's firm, Gordon Ironsides and Fares. In 1906 the ranch and cattle were sold. Dafoe married Mary Ayres in 1907 and they farmed briefly north of Gleichen before settling in Calgary in 1909. John was involved in the livestock commission business with Ed Kenny.
