History
Robert James Crawford, 1874-1966, was born in Ireland and came to Canada in 1893. He worked in Montreal, but when gold was discovered in the Yukon he headed north to prospect. He was one of the few survivors of the Chilkoot Pass snowslide on April 3, 1898. He brought the first team of horses into Dawson City and made a fortune hauling supplies and prospecting. In 1902 he moved to Alberta and homesteaded on Rosebud Creek until 1910, when he took a two year trip to Ireland. On his return he lived in Victoria for two years, then ranched near Strathmore and later Lloydminster before settling on the Bow River near Calgary in 1928. There he raised Jerseys and Herefords until he retired to Bowness in 1948.
