        History

        Ernest Cochrane, 1852-?, was born in Ireland. He graduated as a civil engineer from Queen's College, Belfast in 1875 and worked as an engineer in Dublin for several years. In 1882 he joined the Dublin police. He came to Canada and joined the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1885. He served in Calgary, Alberta, and Regina, Prince Albert and Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan before retiring from the force in 1905. He then moved to Winnipeg where he worked as a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) policeman and later as a guard at the provincial jail.
