Biographical history
Charles Norman "Charlie" Stephen, 1906-1990, was born in Kearny, New Jersey, USA and as a young child moved to Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1924 he was hired by the Hudson's Bay Company and posted to northern Canada where he served as a store manager and fur trader for twenty-eight years. His postings included Whale River, Ungava Bay and Fort McKenzie in Quebec, Fort Good Hope, NWT and Fort Nelson, British Columbia. While posted with the HBC, Charlie filmed and photographed life in the north and published his work in numerous books, calendars and magazines including "Koksoak River Brigade" in the Beaver. - outfit 272 (June 1941), p. 36-43, and "Labrador Voyage" in the Beaver. - outfit 273 (June 1942), p. 20-23. In 1951 he married Mary "Polly" Bruce Calder, 1921-1986, and they settled in Vermilion, Alberta in 1954. In 1970 they retired to Victoria, British Columbia.

The fonds consists of films of Fort McKenzie, his family in Scotland, Fort Chimo, Quebec and the tour of the R.M.S "Nascopie" through the eastern Arctic. Also consists of photographs of HBC posts at Fort Chimo, Fort Mackenzie, Fort Nelson and Lansdowne House, Ontario.
