Biographical history

Charles Frederick Steele, 1917-2004, was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He trained as a clock and watchmaker in Regina. During the Second World War he moved to Calgary, Alberta where he served with the No. 11 Equipment Depot, repairing navigation watches for the air force. After the war he went into the jewelry business with George Wallace of George Wallace Jewellers on 8th Avenue SW. When Mr. Wallace retired, Charles bought the business and renamed it Charles F. Steele Jewellers. The business expanded to a second location at 340 - 7th Avenue SW, and shortly after the 8th Avenue store was closed. He later purchased the De Mille - Steele building in which the store was located. He retired in 1974 and moved to the Bottrell area to raise thoroughbred horses. In 1947 he married Patricia M. Savage, ?-1996, and they had three children, Linda, ?-1985, Jan, and Sue (Browning).

The fonds consists of a brief biography of Charles Steele (2006) by his daughter Sue Browning, and photocopies of photographs of Steele and the jewelry shop on 7th Avenue. Includes a view of him repairing instrumenation during the war.
