        History

The Atlas mine was opened in the Drumheller, Alberta field in 1917 by the Atlas Coal Company. In the 1920s Dr. Omer H. Patrick, 1869-1947, bought an interest in the company and eventually took it over. New Atlas mines were opened near East Coulee in 1928 and 1936, and Dr. Patrick also opened other mines under the names Regal Coal Company and Commander Coal Company. In about 1947 Dr. Patrick's son, Lorraine, 1897-1978, merged all of these mines into Century Coals Ltd. In the mid-1950s a fourth Atlas mine was opened south of East Coulee. It remained open until 1979. Between 1963 and 1971 Century and Amalgamated Coals Ltd. jointly owned Charter Coals Ltd. From the 1950s until the present the company has been managed by Omer H. Patrick, Lorraine's son.
