        History

The Computing and Data Processing Society of Canada was established in 1958 to discuss common concerns of data processing workers. The Section in Calgary, Alberta was established in 1963. In 1965 the organization's name was changed to the Computer Society of Canada, and in 1968 the group had a final name change to the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS). In the 1980s the society developed a comprehensive professionalism program for the Information Technology (IT) industry, including the creation of the designation ISP (Information Systems Professional). The latter designation was legally recognized in Alberta in 1997. The Calgary Section sponsored training, conferences, luncheons and published a newsletter, CIPScene.
