Administrative history
The Canada West Foundation was established in 1970 as a research and lobbying organization to improve the position of the west in Confederation. The first council meeting was in 1973 under the chairmanship of Arthur Child. The first executive director was Dr. L.A. Thorssen and later Dr. David Elton became president. The foundation has sponsored an extensive series of publications on western Canadian issues and problems. Gary Mar became president and CEO in 2020 and the organization celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2021.
