Fonds F2159 - Cam Sproule fonds

John Campbell "Cam" Sproule, 1905-1970, was born in Edmonton, Alberta and raised in Grande Prairie. He attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a degree in geology in 1930. He received a PhD in geology from the University of Toronto in 1935, and from 1932-1936 also taught in the Department of Geology of that university. He then worked for the Geological Survey of Canada until 1939 when he became chief geologist for Norcanol Oil and Gas Company, a subsidiary of Imperial Oil. In 1946 he joined International Petroleum in Toronto and undertook exploration in South America, especially Peru.

In 1951 he moved to Calgary, Alberta established his own petroleum exploration consulting firm, J. C. Sproule and Associates. He was active with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Alberta Petroleum Engineers Association, and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He received the Julian C. Smith Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame in 1998. His other business concerns included Ceramic Arts Ltd. and the Sproule Building (also called the Bow Building). In 1935 he married H. Maude Riley, 1909-1994, and they had two daughters, Anne (McKenzie), 1936- , and Judy, 1938-.
