History
The Calgary Weekend Hikers was formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1980 when a few members of the Skyline Hikers expressed an interest in starting a club that would offer hikes on weekends throughout the summer months. Founding members were Elaine Watson, Rosemarie Krampe and Elsie James. A schedule of twenty-five hikes was drawn up for the first year, led by voluntary hike coordinators. From this modest beginning, the club has grown and flourished and currently offers over two hundred hikes from April 1st to October 31st each year. The majority of hikes are day trips in the Rocky Mountains, the foothills, and other natural settings within easy access of Calgary; however, weekend trips are occasionally offered by the club. The trips are rated according to the level of difficulty and range from easy city walks to challenging mountain scrambles and everything in between. Club members have a passion for hiking and a strong respect for the mountain environment. The club currently has over 350 active members. Each member is required to complete a minimum of four hikes per season to retain their membership in the club. The club is a registered society in the province of Alberta and is a member of the Calgary Area Outdoor Council. Further information about the club can be found at: www.calgaryweekendhikers.com.
