History
The Calgary Gun Club was established in Calgary, Alberta in 1901. (At least one organization with the same name was in existence in the 1890s). From about 1915 to 1930 the group was known as the Calgary Rifle Club and the range was managed by policeman Sergeant Brankley (of the Royal North-West Mounted Police / Alberta Provincial Police). In 1907 the club built a clubhouse on their land at the eastern end of the RNWMP Fort Calgary site and moved sometime between 1909 and 1912 to a range which had been established east of the Bow River, south of 17th Avenue (across from Inglewood in the Albert Park area) which was in use until land was purchased on 17th Avenue and 33rd Street SW in 1947.
The group was incorporated under the Societies Act in 1924. A clubhouse was built at the first location about 1929 and similarly a clubhouse was built on the new location around 1948 (it burned down in 1957). In the late 1950s the range relocated to 32 Avenue and 5th Street NE, south of the airport and another clubhouse was constructed. Among the founders were Dr. John N. Gunn, Lorne Orr and Cliff Andrews and over the years the president's included H. C. Andrew, R. G. "Stoney" Christie, Art Hughes, Ed Jefferies, Hilton Snider, Angus McLennan, Don Blow, Tom Dingle, Harold Kellam and Jim Finlayson.
