Administrative history
The Old Cabin Crafts Society was founded in 1958 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement and preservation of good crafts in Alberta. The first sales were conducted in an old cabin, which was named the Calgary Cabin-Alberta Crafts, at the Calgary Zoo in 1958. The Calgary Cabin was moved downtown in 1963, and larger stores were opened in 1965 and 1969. In 1970 the store was enlarged again to include a separate native crafts area. In October 1972 the store was moved to Palliser Square where another move took place in 1980. The store at its peak had about 250 suppliers and by 1979 sales had totalled over $1.2 million. Province-wide craft competitions were held by the society in 1972, 1974, 1976 and 1979. From 1978 to 1981 the store was subsidized by the Calgary Region Arts Foundation, but it closed in 1982. The society dissolved in 1983.
