History
Lorne Edward Burkell, 1914-1955, was born in Sovereign, Saskatchewan and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Alberta, and then served overseas as a photographer in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Flight Lieutenant). He worked for the Edmonton Bulletin and Calgary Albertan newspapers before opening his own commercial photography business in Calgary in 1950. Burkell married Mary Elizabeth Annand, 1918-198?, in 1941 and they had two daughters, Sally, 1942- , and Nancy, 1947- .
