        History

        Ernest William Bowness, 1878-1972, was born in Prince Edward Island and taught school there before going to Montreal to complete his engineering studies at McGill University. After serving overseas in the South African War he returned to Canada and in 1907 settled in Calgary, Alberta where he began his career in the power industry. Between 1910 and 1926 he worked in various places including British Columbia, Oregon, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia. In 1926 he returned to Calgary as manager of Canadian Utilities Ltd. and in 1934 was made director of Canadian Western Natural Gas and of Canadian Utilities Limited. In 1949 he retired as chairman of the board of these companies. During First World War he fought with the 10th Battalion and during the Second World War he designed air base power systems. He married Virginia Gravitt in 1913 and they had one son, Ernest Andrew, 1926-.
