Biographical history
Bill Simpkins was educated in Fine Arts at the University of Calgary and at the Banff Centre in Alberta. He worked at the Red Deer Advocate as chief photographer and joined the Calgary Herald about 1970, becoming chief photographer about 1976. In the 1990s he moved to St. John's, Newfoundland as manager of Government Relations and Public Affairs for Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd.

The fonds consists of photographs and slides taken by Bill Simpkins of Calgary people, buildings, streets and events, including images for the exhibit "Simpkins Views Calgary" in 1975; and images for the book Chinook Country. -- Toronto : Oxford University Press, 1979; and the book The Yellowhead Route. -- Toronto : Oxford University Press, 1980.
