Biographical history

William "Bill" Niven, 1876-1967, was born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia and came with his family (including brothers Alexander "Sandy", Andrew and James) to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1886. He began working for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1891 and retired in 1941. He became a fireman in 1892 and an engineer in 1900. He was transferred to Calgary in 1898. He married Laura Davies, 1880-1965, a Lethbridge teacher originally from Bobcaygeon, Ontario, in 1902. They had two daughters, Viva Grisella (Niles), 1902-?, and Zeta Roberta "Bunty".

Scope and content

The fonds consists of CPR certificate (1889), train orders (1926), conductor's memo and report (1908, 1926), terminal clearance forms (1927, 1941), and manuals. Also consists of tax notices and correspondence (1909, 1918-1925, 1933), income tax return (1931), receipts and invoices (1912-1925, 1956), programs, postcards and miscellany. Includes Bunty's Western Canada High School yearbooks (1934-1938), Central Collegiate Institute newsletters (1919-1921), photographs of the 1912 and 1919 Calgary Stampedes and family photographs. Also includes teaching certificates of Laura Niven (1896-1899).
