      History

      James Cranston Shaw Bennett, 1865-1941, was born in Montreal, Quebec. He became a photographer and worked for William Notman and Sons for eighteen years, had his own business, and joined the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) as a photographer in its publicity department in 1902. He eventually became the CPR's senior photographer. From 1905 to 1930 he spent the summer months in the Rocky Mountains taking photos on foot of the Banff, Glacier and Kootenay areas. Stationed in Montreal throughout his career, he moved to Hudson Heights, Quebec in 1928 and retired in 1932. He and his wife, Sarah Bowles, had three children, Leslie W. (Longridge), Margaret Jean (Henry) and W.J.
