Gilbert Beatson, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1927. He received his B.Arch. from the University of Manitoba in 1950, then proceeded to do graduate work at the Sorbonne (Paris) in 1952. After working for Lloyd Finch Architects (Winnipeg, 1952-55) he became Chief Architect, Western Region for the Canadian Pacific Railway (1955-56).
