      Francis Charles "Frank" Bates, 1899-1966, was born at Stylebawn Farm, Delgany, County Wicklow, Ireland and came with his family to Gleichen, Alberta in 1911. In 1918 he joined the Lord Strathcona's Horse and served in England. After the war he was active in the 22nd Battery at Gleichen. Bates worked at Gleichen Motors, then from about 1927 until 1934 as a farm instructor at Old Sun Residential School on the Blackfoot (Siksika) reserve. In 1927 he married Lila Jane Jones, 1909-1985, of Carbon, Alberta. They moved to Kimberley, British Columbia in 1934 to work in the Sullivan Mine. Frank and Lila had three children, Richard Bedford, 1930- , Francis Mervyn, 1931- . and Marcia Rose (Picard), 1946- .
