Biographical history

Arthur Ernest Rice-Jones, 1912-1989, was born in Coronation, Alberta, the son of Cecil Rice-Jones and Emily Bigland. He was educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was a well known hockey player, who from 1929 to the early 1940s played as a goal tender for the Elmwood Millionaires, Winnipeg Monarchs, Queen's Club of London, Geraldton Gold Miners, and Stampeders Hockey Club in Calgary. During the Second World War he played with the Victoria Army hockey team while in training, served with the Calgary Highlanders, and was wounded in France. For 30 years he ran his own business in Calgary as a Manufacturers Agent for men's wear. He retired in 1977. He was married twice, first to Jean MacTavish, with whom he had two children, Peter Rice-Jones and Linda (Loughlin). His second wife was Kathleen Howse, and his step-children were David Howse and Deborah Pluto.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of Art’s personal material from his hockey career, and military service in World War Two. This includes scrapbooks about his hockey and military careers, correspondence with his Father Cecil and other family members and friends during his various tours overseas and in Calgary, and photographs of various hockey teams including the Elmwood Millionaires, Winnipeg Monarchs, Calgary Stampeders, and Victoria Army hockey Team.
