Biographical history
Arthur Birkett, 1884-1972, was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England and trained as a teacher. He taught in London, then emigrated to Canada in 1907. He taught all over the country, including several years in Lethbridge, Alberta. During the First World War he joined the Lethbridge Highlanders and was wounded at Vimy Ridge. He convalesced in the Lethbridge Hospital for two years. IN 1916 he married Ethel Stanfield, ?-1975, and they had five children. While he continued to work throughout Alberta as a teacher, his family was based at a farm purchased in 1928 near Edmonton. When the Second World War began Birkett was teaching at Lesser Slave Lake. He joined the Veterans Guard and was posted to guard prisoners of war in several camps throughout western Canada. After the war the farm was sold and the family settled in Onoway, Alberta. Birkett's memoirs were published as Green Englishman. -- New York : Vantage Press, 1970.

The fonds consists of certificates relating to school attendance and teaching career; memoirs relating to family life, attending normal school and teaching in England; memoirs relating to the First World War, the Second World War, teaching and life in Western Canada; and miscellaneous other reminiscences and stories. Also includes correspondence with various magazines and newspapers regarding publication of articles; correspondence with Vantage Press regarding publication of “The Green Englishman” and potential second book of collected essays; and first galley proof “Collected Essays – Arthur Birkett”.
