History
Anthony Patrick Russell was born in London , England. He received his BSc from the University of Exeter, Devonshire, England in 1969 and his PhD from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London in 1972. Russell's dissertation was on "The foot of Gekkonid lizards: A study in functional and comparative anatomy. He joined the University of Calgary in August 1973 as an Instructor in the Department of Biology. Russell was the Associate Dean (Student Affairs) for the Faculty of Science 1985-1991, and Head of the Department of Biological Sciences 1994-1999.
Throughout his academic career, Russell received 50 funding awards and to date has authored 269 fully refereed papers, twenty chapters, four books and thirteen conference proceedings. He was awarded the F.E.J. Fry Medal, Canadian Society of Zoologists in 2020 for his outstanding contributions to knowledge and understanding in zoology.
Russell retired from the University in 2013 and is currently Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
