Biographical history

Andrew Henderson, 1853-1935, was born in Sorel, Quebec. He completed an apprenticeship in pharmacy, and then received his doctorate in medicine from McGill University in 1880. He settled in Calgary, Alberta in June 1883, the first civilian doctor in the community. In July 1883 he built a house that also served as a pharmacy and medical office, and in April 1884 he married Jane Edith Blain of Galt, Ontario. In 1887 Dr. Henderson moved to Minnesota, USA where he taught at the University of Minnesota and administered the hospital in the lumber town of Scanlon. In 1910 he became the first physician, hospital administrator, coroner and health officer in the new company town of Powell River, British Columbia. The Hendersons had two children, Richard Gordon “Tobe” and Marjorie Sutherland.

The fonds consists of a framed illuminated manuscript presented to Dr. Henderson by prominent citizens as a token of appreciation when he left Calgary in 1887; a photograph of Dr. and Mrs. Henderson in front of their house (1884); a record of the Henderson’s Christmas guests (1884-1893); photocopies of news clippings and a page from his family Bible; and a biographical article written by his great-grandson Kenneth McMillan.
