History
Ole Jacob Amundsen, 1860-1918, emigrated to North America from Christiana, Norway. He married Mary Thompson, 1867-1918, in North Dakota, USA where he owned a farm and ran a passenger boat from his home on Devil's Lake. In 1901 Ole travelled to Alberta and purchased Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) homestead land where Claresholm is now located. He returned to Devil's Lake briefly to collect his family, and convinced many of his neighbours to purchase land in the Claresholm area as well. The Amundsens were a prominent ranching family in the district. In 1912 Ole was appointed a land agent for the Canadian Pacific Irrigation Colonization Company Ltd. He and Mary had nine children, Clara (North), Agnes (Ringrose), Adolph, Claude J.,1892-, Johnny, Mae (Thomas), Ethel (Gidman), Lena (Fix), and Grace (Berg). After the premature death of Mary and Ole, the control of their estates fell into the hands of their children.
