Biographical history
Alfred Sidney McKay, 1860-1940, was born in Woodbridge, Ontario and joined Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) survey crews in Ontario and the prairies from 1879 to 1880. He soon settled west of Calgary (across the Bow River from Edworthy Park) and remained there for the rest of his life. He was very interested in civic affairs and was engaged in ranching in Simons Valley. Beginning in the 1920s McKay was very active with the Southern Alberta Pioneers' and Old Timers' Association. He and his wife, Catherine Hemmings, had at least five sons, Alfred Edward, ?-1969, William A., 1906-1976, Herbert Charles, 1899-?, Gordon J., ?-1988, and Victor Joseph, ?-1966.
