Administrative history
The AWSN has its roots in Operation Minerva which was formed in 1989 by a small group of women working in the sciences to provide opportunities for female students in junior and senior high schools to interact with women working in the sciences generally and to experience their work place. In 1993, women collaborating on Operation Minerva and other similar projects in Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, formed the AWSN of which Operation Minerva was an Associate organization. It remained the largest program of the ASWN. AWSN also promotes the STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) since its inception in the early 2000s. In 20016, AWSN celebrated their 25th anniversary.
