      History

The Alberta Universities Commission was established April 1, 1966 by the Universities Act 1966 which provided for the continuation of the University of Alberta but allowed for the creation of the University of Calgary. The establishment of a commission to act on behalf of the Government of Alberta in certain respects, and as an intermediary between the universities and the Government, was recommended by a Joint Committee of staff (Edmonton and Calgary) and the then Board of Governors, which was set up to make recommendations relative to a new universities act. The Commission dissolved in 1971.
