"The Beaver", originally called "The Welfare News", was a military periodical distributed by the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group among its members stationed in Soest, West Germany. It was first published by Herr Herbert Hertrampf to apprise newcomers of local services, theatres, radio and church events. In May 1957, Brigadier Roger Rowley permitted the formal creaton of a weekly newspaper with a staff composed of Captain "Jim" Mitchell of the Queen's Own Rifles, Herr Hertrampf, Dick O'Neill, Ruth Held and Rennate Milbradt.

The Soest Community Newsletter was a base publication created during the 4CMBG (4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group) occupation in West Germany, intended to inform personnel of various goings-on and report on local relations with the German city of Soest.
