Biographical history
The Women's Canadian Club of Calgary was formed in 1911 with 53 members. Mrs. C.A. Stuart was the first president. The purpose of the club is to foster an interest in public affairs, and to cultivate an attachment for Canadian institutions. This is achieved primarily through bringing prominent guest speakers to the city. Notable speakers who have addressed the club in the past include Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung and R.B. Bennett. The group has also worked to secure better laws pertaining to women and children, improved sanitation, the establishment of a tubercular sanatorium in Calgary, etc.
For further information see Elise Corbet's article, "The Women's Canadian Club of Calgary" in Alberta History, vol. 24, no. 3 (Summer 1977), p. 29-36.
