Biographical history
William Shearer, 1857-1929, was born in Ontario and educated at Presbyterian College in Montreal. He graduated in 1879 and began a long career as a Protestant minister. In 1880 he married Isabella Reid Russell, 1859-1928, and they had nine children, Helen Rankin (Morrison), James Russell, Winfred McMaster, John Edward, Jeannie Isabella (McDonald), Andrew Bell, William Reid, Thomas Ralph and Harold Ross. William preached in Ontario and Quebec until 1910 when the family moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. He served as superintendent of missions for the Calgary Presbytery, 1911-1919, then preached in Redcliff, Alberta until 1921. He spent 1921 to 1924 in Quebec, then retired to Calgary. He assisted at Knox United Church from 1926 until his death.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of marriage certificates and contract, will, miscellaneous correspondence and personal papers; and photographs of the graduates of Presbyterian College (1879), small Alberta towns and churches (1911-1913), Central Collegiate football team and commerce class (1913-1915) and Thomas Shearer surveying near Banff (1913). Also consists of photocopies of diaries and notebooks regarding his ministerial work (1887-1888, 1910-1914, 1919-1926).
