Biographical history

Wendell Maclean, 1863-1936, was born in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, attended college in New York, USA, and worked as a pharmacist in Nova Scotia for two years. He moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1888 and worked for Samuel W. Trott who opened Calgary's first drug store in 1883. Wendell bought the business which was situated at 129-8th Avenue SE in 1888. He built the six-storey Maclean Block at 109-8th Avenue SE in 1911 and moved the drug store to the building's main floor in 1913. Renters at the Maclean Block included physicians, lawyers and insurance agents. After Wendell's death the drug store was managed by W.H. Upton, and owned by H.H. Henker ca. 1945-1949. Wendell married Marion Livingstone in 1902 and they had four daughters and a son.

These records were discovered in the Maclean Block vault and donated to the Glenbow.

The fonds consists of Maclean Drug Store financial ledger (1912-1925) and prescription register (1915-1916); drugstore and Maclean Block financial statements, balance sheets and summary of operations (1923-1932, 1936, 1937, 1939); Wendell's income tax returns (1923-1932); and Maclean Block rental statements and accounts (1928-1937).
