Biographical history

William John Cameron Kirby, 1909-2003 , was born in Calgary and educated there and at the University of British Columbia. For some years after 1930 he taught in schools at Hussar and Okotoks, Alberta. Later in the 1930s he returned to UBC to study law. He served in the Second World War and then practiced law in Red Deer with Kirby, Murphy, Armstrong and Beames. In 1953 W.J.C. became president of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Association and the following year was elected to the Alberta Legislature in a by-election. He was re-elected in 1955 but defeated in 1959. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Alberta, and during the 1970s headed a board of review that reported in the Alberta judicial system. He retired from the bench in 1984. He married Marion Jean Torrance in 1954 and they had two children, William John Torrance and Catherine Elaine (Clark).
