Biographical history

In February 1981 the Board of Governors for The University of Calgary approved funding of the University Press. The Press was established to foster communication between academics and among industry, government and business personnel with an emphasis on work done in Alberta or the West, to encourage excellence in research within the University, and to assist deserving publications.

The Press published its first book in 1982, and at that time was headed by an Acting Director and a part-time Business Manager. A Director was appointed in 1983 or 1984 and was advised by a Board of Management. An Operations Manager was appointed in 1984, a Promotions Coordinator by 1989, and a Production Editor by 1990. In 1988 or 1989 the Director, University Press began reporting to the newly-created Director of Information Services position which reported to the Vice-President (Academic) and Provost.

Restructuring at the university in 1999 resulted in the University of Calgary Press reporting to the Director of Information Resources who in turn reported to the Vice-President (Academic). In 2006, Information Resources became Libraries and Cultural Resources led by the Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources) and University Librarian.
