Funding for the development and initial operation of Co-operative Education at the University of Calgary was provided by the Department of Employment and Immigration Canada as a result of the "Proposal for Co-operative Education" submitted by the University in January 1988. In 1996, the name was changed to Co-operative Education and Internship Program. Both programs integrate university study with relevant work experience. Co-op students alternate periods of full-time work in appropriate fields of business, industry, government, social services and the professions with their academic terms. Students are available in January, May and September for 4, 8 and sometimes 12-month terms. Internship students spend twelve to sixteen consecutive months on a work term, between their third and fourth years of academic study.
The Faculties of Arts, Science, Schulich School of Engineering, and Haskayne School of Business all take part in the program. Co-operative Education and Internship (formerly Co-operative Education) has grown from 6 programs in 1989 to more than 20 programs in 2004 to 60 co-operative and 9 internship programs in 2015.
Co-operative Education began in 1988 with Mr. Bill Holbrow as director (serving from 1988-1997). He reported to the Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) in the Vice-President (Academic) area of responsibility. In 1996, the name changed to the Co-operative Education and Internship Program, and the position of director appears to have been discontinued. In 1998, the program was taken over by Career Services and in 2000, Janice Attersley became the new director. Craig Fortner became the director of Career Services in 2001. By 2002, the position of director again appears to have been discontinued. There are directors of Co-operative Education in each of the faculties where the program is offered.
The Co-operative Education Advisory Council (CEAC) was formed in November of 1989 to establish an official link, at the executive level, between various sectors of the economy and those faculties at the University offering Co-operative Education. The mandate of the Council is to advise, recommend and take action on matters which are referred to it through the members, with a view to the continuing improvement and growth of Co-operative Education. The Council's first Chair was Mr. Kevin Peterson of the Calgary Herald.
