Biographical history
In the fall of 1967, the Students' Union Building opened on campus. It has since been called the University Centre, and eventually, MacEwan Hall. Joseph McCulley, Warden Emeritus of Hart House at the University of Toronto, was consulted in 1967 as to the policies and procedures to follow in regards to the administration of the building. His report suggested a continuation of the partnership that already existed between the University of Calgary and the Students' Union when the funding and building of the Centre was undertaken. He also suggested that the Centre be given a distinctive name.
The University Centre Commission was established in May, 1967 in order to exercise over-all management and control of the Centre and to formulate policies under which various activities at the Centre could be conducted. There were three standing Committees of the Commission: University Services, Building Policies and Finance. The Centre was officially named MacEwan Hall in the opening ceremonies with Grant MacEwan in November, 1967. By 1969 the Commission had became the MacEwan Hall Directorate.
