Biographical history

Toole, Peet and Company Ltd. was established in 1905 when William "Barney" Toole and George L. Peet formed a partnership. Toole, 1871-1952, was born in Ireland, came to Canada at age 28, and started with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) land department in Winnipeg in 1890. In 1895, he was transferred to Calgary, Alberta as district land agent. Peet, 1870-1953, also Irish, came to Canada in 1891 and established an insurance business in Calgary in 1897. Their new company dealt in real estate, insurance, mortgage loans, investments and coal.

From 1905 to 1925 it was the sole agent for the CPR subdivisions of Mount Royal, Scarboro, Bankview, Sunalta and Bridgeland. The firm was officially incorporated in 1913 with Toole as president and Peet as vice-president. When Barney Toole died in 1952, his brother, Archer J. Toole, became president. In 1973, A.J. Toole's son, W.J. Toole, became president. The company now deals predominantly in insurance and property management, and is Calgary's largest locally-owned independent insurance broker.
