Biographical history

Thomas Black Moffat, 1870-1939, was born in Fergus, Ontario. He studied at the Chicago School of Engraving in the late 1880s, and then taught at the school for several years. He travelled through Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA and the western American states ca. 1892. He returned to Canada and lived in Toronto and Winnipeg before settling in Calgary, Alberta in 1910. He and his brother, Alex, ran a jewelry and optician business at 208-8th Avenue SW, Calgary during the 1910s and 1920s. In 1926 he married Winifred A. Heathcote, 1895-1972, who was born in Edmonton. They had one son, Thomas David, 1927-2010. In the 1930s Thomas was the chief engraver for Henry Birks and Sons. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1911, and served as president in 1928. He did extensive hiking in Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho National Parks. In 1930 Mount Moffat near Maligne Lake was named after him. In 1934 the Moffats took a trip to eastern Canada and USA during which Thomas gave illustrated lectures on the mountains and ACC activities.
