Biographical history

Stuart A. F. Mackie, 1923-2003, was born in Calgary, Alberta and attended schools there. He worked as an aircraft mechanic during the Second World War, and afterwards serviced planes in Edmonton, Alberta. About 1947 he joined the Calgary photo studio of his uncle Allan K. Mackie, 1904-1973, and cousin Ian Mackie. Soon after he took over the studio and operated it until the late 1970s. Mackie learned photography basics from his father, Norman S. Mackie, 1893-1984, then trained in New York. He also knew and was influenced by Yousuf Karsh. Stuart Mackie specialized in portraiture, particularly of children. He and his first wife, had one daughter, Susan (Vincent). He remarried to Joan Prince.
