Biographical history

Stanley "Stan" Brooker, 1892-1987, was born in London, England, and became an apprentice at fourteen years of age. In 1908 he emigrated to Canada and worked as a farm labourer near Ingersoll, Ontario. His family joined him in 1911, and in the following year they all moved to Alberta and farmed for Adam Watson west of Airdrie. In 1914 Stan moved to Calgary where he became car mechanic and chauffeur to James Short and Fred Lowes. During First World War he served with the Canadian Field Engineers in France, Belgium, Germany and England. After his discharge in England in 1919 he married Muriel, 1889-1979, and the couple moved to Wayne, Alberta where Stan was head machine man at the Rose Deer Coal Mine in the Drumheller coal field. Stan and Muriel had three children, Douglas, 1920- , Arthur, 1921- , and Dorothy, 1925- . In 1926 the family moved to Calgary where Stan opened Brookers Battery and Ignition Service at 16th Avenue and 1st Street NE. Throughout the 1920s-1950s he built and provided public-address systems for various events. From 1929-1941 he operated the Imperial Oil service station at 16th Avenue and Edmonton Trail NE. During the Second World War he was a radio instructor for the Canadian Army. In 1945 he opened Brookers Radio at 16th Avenue and 2nd Street NW with his son, Arthur, and in 1967 he joined with North Hill TV to form Associated TV at 135-16th Avenue NW. He retired in 1973.

The fonds consists of photograph portraits of Stan (1910, 1916); and photographs of Brooker family and friends (1911-1924), farming at Airdrie (1912-1914), First World War friends (1916-1919), Calgary scenes and cars (1914-1915), town of Wayne and coal mines (1919-1926), Imperial Oil service station (1930s), and Stan's PA system work (1937-1938). Also consists of autobiographical notes, reminiscences and sketches of the Rose Deer Coal Mine (1977); drawings of 1913 car and 1921 radio (1976); and correspondence (1914-1915, 1937-1952).
