Biographical history

Spence Shoes was established in Calgary by Robert Spence, ?-1951, who came to the city from Ontario in 1910. He worked at Sibley's Shoe Store, and Richardson's Limited. By 1923 Spence was the sole owner. The store was purchased by James Steedman, 1928-2005 and James Rankin in 1961 and eventually expanded to 10 stores in the city.
